The School of Public Health (SPH) is a forerunner of the Department of Public Health, which was established in 1968 under the School of Medicine, University of Zambia (UNZA). As the scope of the department continued to undergo both strategic and operational reforms, it embraced a wider public health service that lead to the creation of a critically sized pool of highly trained public health professionals, both in generic and specialized fields. Our pool of staff in turn have continued to be part of a key national resource base that is able to effectively address the public health problems in Zambia.
The School of Public Health has a multidisciplinary team of competent faculty and researchers with a range of relevant research experience in conducting research. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods designs, particularly household and health facility surveys, implementation research, data analysis and reviews are examples of the types of work we have done, and continue to do. In addition, the School of Public Health has a countrywide experience in conducting research with different Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and government bodies such as the Ministry of Health and Central Statistic Office. Importantly, through its mandate in training, the school has the expertise in training research and data collectors.
As a school, operate under the broad mandate of the University of Zambia Act No. 11 of 1999. While under this mandate, we train professionals in Bioethics, Environmental Health Science, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Family Medicine, Health Policy and Management, Health Promotion, Health Demography, Nutrition and other health professionals.
